The Zambia Revenue Authority -ZRA- at Chirurndu one stop border post has intercepted two trucks carrying smuggled goods worth over three Million Kwacha.
ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Topsy Sikalinda said the first truck was carrying assorted brands of liquor worth 2.7 million Kwacha which were falsely declared as Onions.
Mr Sikalinda said Government would have been robbed of over One point Five Million Kwacha in tax had the smugglers managed to smuggle the assorted alcohol in the country.
He explains that the taxpayer paid about Five Thousand Two Hundred Kwacha for the onions when the actual taxes for the liquor was supposed to be over One point Five Million Kwacha.
Mr Sikalinda adds that the second truck carrying coated steel coils was intercepted after it used a fake bill of entry and avoided to pay taxes worth over One Hundred and 62 Thousand Kwacha in an attempt to evade tax.
He has told journalists shortly after inspection at Chirundu border post that both trucks have been issued with seizure notices and will soon be recommended for forfeiture to the state.
Mr Sikalinda said the Authority has noted with sadness, that despite the various tax relief measures that government has put in place to support the business sector during the Covid-19 period, people have continued to think of smuggling as an option.
He said the Authority has further noticed that smugglers are now using transits as a main form of smuggling but the law will catch up with them.
