The Zambia National Service (ZNS) yesterday impounded foreign trucks loaded with 2,450 by 50 kg bags of Soya beans which were about to be smuggled out of the country using fake export documents.
ZNS Muchinga Regional commander, Phinious Muntanga said the 4 trucks were seized in Nakonde district after owners of the contraband attempted to bribe ZNS officers with 500 kwacha.
Lt Colonel Muntanga said the trucks were seized after alert officers discovered that the consignment had false documents.
“The seized trucks together with the contraband will be handed over to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) for a possible seizure of both the vessels and the contraband, when the drivers were stopped they tried to bribe our officers, I would like to put it out that no amount of bribery or corruption will stop us from enforcing the law on the smugglers” he said.
And Nakonde District Commissioner Field Simwinga commended ZNS for remaining vigilant and ensuring that all trucks involved in the illegal conveyance of Soya beans, maize and other grains are impounded.
“They are a lot of people that have gotten money from unsuspecting residents with the pretext that they will are going to buy soya beans, those are the same people that are coming up with these tricks, but then we are on top of things, illegality will not be allowed by all means,” he said.
Mr Simwinga advised those that wish to export Soya beans to use the right channels as stipulated by laws of the country
