The Zambia National Council for Catholic Laity (ZNCCL) has launched the voter education program ahead of the general elections slated for 12th August.
ZNCCL National Treasurer Felix Nonde says the voter education program is aimed at encouraging all eligible Zambians to equip themselves with the necessary information and knowledge to enable them effectively participates in the elections.
Mr Nonde said the project is called democracy strengthening in Zambia project which is been undertaken with the support of the United Nation Development Program in five dioceses, Kasama ,Mpika ,Mongu Kabwe and Livingstone.
“The program will focus on building capacities of community based educators on election voting and also raise community awareness on the importance of voting in elections, the voter education will also facilitate social and political accountability between citizens and power holders at community level,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops National Pastoral Coordinator Cornelius Chibamba said the church should continue to positively influence the members of the public to participate in politics and civic affairs of the country.
Speaking on his behalf ZCCB education secretary Leonard Namuhumba said the church should encourage all eligible Zambians to use the opportunity to choose leaders of their choice who will govern the country after August 12.
And the team leader of the Development Strengthening Zambia Charity Musamba said project will also address political violence so that all citizens can vote peacefully and enhance fair elections.
” The signing of the peace agreement by political parties is welcomed but it is important that it is translated in their actions because it is not the first time political parties have signed political agreements,” he said.
