The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has seized and withdrawn over 10,557 cases of non-compliant potable spirits valued at K1,033,260 in Lusaka.
ZCSA Public Relations Officer Onishias Maamba, stated that the products were seized because suppliers had no permit to supply them on the market, contrary to the provisions of sections 15 and 21 of the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017.
Mr Maamba also said the products lacked batch numbers and manufacturing dates, making it difficult for the Agency to guarantee their safety.
“This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that only safe products are supplied to consumers,” Maamba said. “We will continue conducting enforcement and public education activities across Zambia to protect consumers and the environment from unsafe products.”
He said the Agency also seized 58 pressing irons at Makeni Mall in Lusaka for having non-compliant top plugs valued at K20,479.42.
Mr Maamba said ZCSA is warning of punitive measures against entities that manufacture, import, and supply products without complying with Zambian laws, as such products may pose a risk to public safety and health.
The Agency will soon publish a list of registered entities to guide consumers on which local manufacturers and importers have authority to supply products covered by compulsory standards on the market.
Consumers are encouraged to visit the ZCSA stand at the 2024 CAMINEX show in Kitwe from May 28-30 to learn more about the Agency’s mandate and report suspicious products.
