The Ministry of Health in Zambia has announced plans to distribute oral cholera vaccines to 54 identified cholera hotspots across the country starting the first week of December. This move is aimed at preventing and controlling cholera outbreaks in affected areas.
According to Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, Permanent Secretary (Technical Services) at the Ministry of Health, the ministry currently has two million doses of cholera vaccines, with an additional three million doses expected to arrive soon. Dr. Lishimpi emphasized that the ministry has enhanced its surveillance systems to ensure rapid containment of any potential cholera outbreaks.
In addition to the vaccine distribution, the ministry has also set up oral rehydration points in cholera hotspots to provide timely access to oral rehydration solutions in the event of an outbreak. The Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) is working with community-based volunteers to promote hygiene education and maintain clean environments.
The ministry’s efforts have been commended by Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Her Excellency Mrs. Rose Sakala, who praised the proactive measures being taken to improve public health and manage potential cholera outbreaks.
