Zambia has recorded a surge in copper production from January 1st to September 2020.
From January 1 to September 30, 2020, the country produced more than 6-hundred and 46 thousand metric tonnes of copper.
However, during the same period last year, the country produced more than 5-hundred and 90 thousand metric tonnes of copper.
The status quo shows that the green metal’s production capacity has increased by more than 55 thousand metric tonnes between January and September 20, 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.
Mines and Minerals Development Minister Richard Musukwa has described the surge as a milestone, given that Zambia like many other countries on the globe has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Musukwa said the prospects for the mining industry in Zambia are bright despite the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the country’s economy.
He said this is due to the interventions that government has put in place and the current favorable prices of copper on the international market.
Meanwhile, Mr. Musukwa said government has developed a Gold Mining Strategy to guide the exploration of gold.
