Zambia, DRC seek solution to congestion at Kasumbalesa

Government will seek the attention of SADC and AU regarding the traffic jam that has choked business at Kasumbalesa Border Post on the Copperbelt Province.

Trucks enroute to the Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC- have been stuck for several days creating traffic congestion stretching over 50 kilometres.

Road Transport and Safety Agency -RTSA- Chief Executive Officer Zindaba Soko says the agency is seeking the attention of government to raise the matter at SADC and AU to avoid a repeat and to urge DRC authorities to open up the borders.

Mr Soko said the situation of marooned trucks is posing a huge challenge and risk on Zambian roads.

He also urged Chililabombwe Municipal Council to explore the opportunity of opening up dry ports as an income earner for the local authority.

Mr Soko was speaking when he toured Kasumbalesa.

And a trucker from Tanzanian Emili Kasongo said as a result of the congestion and slow clearance on the DRC side, truckers have ended up spending more days than necessary.
