Zambia dates Argentina for information exchange on mining

By JOHN SAKALA
Zambia has called on Argentina to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding on the flow of information and best practices in the mining sector.

Argentina’s Chamber of Mines Executive Director Luciano Beresnstein agreed to the proposal made by Zambia in Buenos Aires, and said that there is urgent need for his association to work in close collaboration with the Zambia Chamber of Mines (ZCM).

During bilateral talks with Zambia’s Ambassador to Brazil with extra-accreditation to Argentina, Alfreda Kansembe-Mwamba, the Argentines further invited ZCM to their 2021 Mining Expo in Buenos Aires.

The ZCM has been informed on the positive response by Argentina’s Chamber of Mines to have a MoU in place.

ZCM Chief Executive Officer Sokwani Chilembo said the move by Argentina was exciting.

“That’s fantastic. We are looking to build a centre of excellence here with regard to mine safety and rescue services. That’s a good place to start as we can expand from there,” said Mr Chilembo.

Meanwhile, Argentina’s Secretary for Mining Mr Mariano Lamothe said Argentina was open to sign a MoU with Zambia on Research and Development in renewable energy.

The MoU will be between Zambia and the Argentine Department of Research and Development which is tasked to undertake research and development of renewable energy.

And Dr Mwamba welcomed the gesture.

She said Zambia was interested to enter into cooperation that had potential to create economic development.

Argentina has secure mining legislation including a tax on copper exports. It is the world’s largest producer of Biofuels, the eighth largest country in the world and a member of the G20 group of wealthy nations with its GDP of $500 billion.

This is according to media statement made available to The Independent Observer by the First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Zambian Embassy in Brazil Grace Makowane.
