Deputy Inspector General of Police Administration Eugene Sibote has appealed to the residents in Zambezi to remain calm as police have instituted investigations into the death of an individual who died while remanded at the correctional facility as police were following information regarding suspected illegal possession of gun.
Mr Sibote said residents of Zambezi ran amok when members of the public suspected that the deceased could have been subjected to torture thereby damaging property and burning the Zambezi police station land cruiser among other things.
In a statement made available to the media yesterday, Mr Sibote said police has deployed reinforcement to ensure peace adding that the current situation is calm.
He said that the police had engaged the traditional authority in Zambezi over the matter and that they have assured the command of cooperation pending investigations.
“The situation in Zambezi arose from the death of an individual, who was detained at a Correctional Facility as Police were following information regarding suspected illegal possession of gun.
“Arising from the death of a suspect members of the public suspected that he could have been subjected to torture leading to his death,”he said.
He said that a team of Police Officers and a Pathologist will soon be sent to conduct a post-mortem and an inquiry into the matter.
