The University of Zambia (UNZA) School of Law has emerged runners up in the 10th SADC Regional Child Rights Moot Court Competition at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
The competition that attracted thirteen (13) universities from the Southern Africa region, saw the UNZA team triumph over University of Malawi and University of Johannesburg in the preliminary rounds to advance to the Semi-finals of the competition. To secure its place in the finals against Western Cape University where UNZA missed a tie by 0.5 points, UNZA beat University of Great Zimbabwe and Stellenbosch University.
UNZA Vice Chancellor Luke Mumba, has congratulated UNZA School of Law for putting up excellent performances at both the Regional Child Rights Moot Court Competition in South Africa and the Nelson Mandela world Human Rights Moot Court Competition held in Switzerland.
Prof Mumba has paid glowing tribute to the Dean in the School of Law, Prof Chuma Himonga, the teaching staff and the Law School Moot Court Co-ordinator and Coach, James Kayula, for lifting high the flag of the University of Zambia at the regional and global events respectively.
The Vice Chancellor has recognized and expressed gratitude at the hard work and endurance that the students that participated in the two competitions put in.
UNZA was represented by third (3rd) year students, Kabwe Nkunta and Abednego Chuni.
The finals were held at the Palace of Justice, High Court of South Africa, in Pretoria presided over by the Judge, Deputy President and two other High Court Judges.
In the same vein, The University of Zambia (UNZA) Law School, emerged as a finalist in the pre-final round of the 11th Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition held In Geneva, Switzerland.
In the African region, 96 universities entered the competition for the event, where only 10 universities out of the 96 qualified to take part in the competition. UNZA was selected to be among the top 10 universities to make the number of 44 top Universities globally to take part in the world Human Rights learning platform which Oxford University of United Kingdom scooped after beating Macquarie University of Australia.
The UNZA team was represented by third (3rd) year students, Mainga Simoonga and Helen Chitalu.
The University of Zambia Law School is the oldest and most prestigious Law School in Zambia with over 60% of its Faculty in possession of PhDs from reputable institutions. The School boasts of having produced three (3) Republican Presidents on the African Continent: President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa SC (1974), his Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu (1981) and his Excellency Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe (1976).
