Uniting to do wrong things

By Rev Clifford Chisha
Unity is good but it is only good when it is not for a wrong reason.

Sometimes we get blinded by our ambitions and join forces with wrong people to fight against good.

Yes, we unite for wrong reasons.

Frustration, if not well managed, may slowly cause a person to slide into a team united to do wrong things.

Check your unity. Is it around right and beneficial things?

Why have you joined people who believe in what you don’t believe in?

What wrong have you seen today in those you praised yesterday?

Frustration, frustration, yes, frustration could be one of the influencing factors.

In the first book of the Bible, we encounter a story of people who got united for a wrong thing.

After the floods which took place during the time of Noah, the sons of Noah multiplied.

From these, nations spread abroad on the earth.

People begun to migrate from the east, found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

They agreed to build a city and a tower, and they had reasons.

There was unity, yes great teamwork was exhibited.

They started building a tower of babel and could have been successful, but God intervened.

“They said, “Come, let us build a city for ourselves, and a tower whose top will reach into the heavens, and let us make a [famous] name for ourselves, so that we will not be scattered [into separate groups] and be dispersed over the surface of the entire earth [as the LORD instructed].””

(Genesis 11:4)

Reasons for building the famous tower of Babel:

  1. To make a name for themselves.

“…and let us make a name for ourselves…” (Genesis 11:4)

  1. To avoid being scattered.

“…so that we will not be scattered [into separate groups] and be dispersed over the surface of the entire earth.” (Genesis 11:4)

The above reasons were not good reasons. They conflicted with the will of God.

God’s will was that mankind form many nations.

“And God blessed them [granting them certain authority] and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth,…””

(Genesis 1:28)

In contempt of the divine will mankind united to build a city and a tower to prevent their separating.

They united around wrong things.

This is why God got concerned, confused their language and scattered them.

When you unite to do wrong things, God will be against you.
