UNHCR praises Govt on refugee crisis response

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) special envoy for the horn of Africa Mohammed Abdi Affey has expressed gratitude to the Zambian Government on its response to the refugee crisis in neighboring countries.

Mr Affey says Zambia is currently hosting over 1-hundred thousand refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Somalia.

Mr Affey said Zambia must be commended for being a peaceful country as demonstrated during the 2021 General Election transition of power.

He said this has helped provide safe Asylum of refugees coming to Zambia.

Mr Affey who is in Zambia on a three day visit also said that he will engage Government on various issues

And UNHCR Country Representative Pierrine Aylara said there are eleven thousand refugees from DRC willing to go back to their home.

Ms Aylara said this is because their country is slowly returning to peace, a situation she described as good news.
