Two miners buried alive while illegally mining

Two men in Chingola were buried alive after the ground they were illegally mining collapsed on them.

Anos Mwewa 24 and Bruce Filipe aged 22 died after being buried alive at SP 12 after a trench they were mining copper from collapsed.

The incident happened at SP 12 KCM mine plant at around 14:00 hours on December 16, 2022.

Copperbelt Police Commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba said uncle to of deceased Anos reported the matter to the police.

“Brief facts are that Anos’ uncle Dominic Mofya 34, of Hellen area Chingola reported to Chingola Central Police on December 16, at 15:50 hours that his nephew Anos Mwewa 24, of the same address and Bruce Filipe 22, of Chiwempala area, died after being buried alive at SP 12 after a trench they were digging copper ore collapsed on them, killing them instantly,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said other details concerning the accident are not known but bodies of the two deceased were retrieved by their friends on December 16, 2022.

He said they were later taken to the police around 16:00 hours and BID forms were issued.

“The two bodies were later taken to Nchanga North General Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial,” he said.
