Two former Ministers arrested for Arson

The Zambia Police service has arrested two former Ministers and four others in a case of Arson involving a Mahindra motor vehicle in Kawambwa.

And Police have also arrested former Mitete District Commissioner (DC) Kaumba Manjolo 50, in Connection with the shooting incident in Mulobezi Parliamentary By-Election.

And Inspector General Of police Lemmy Kajoba said that investigations into the arson matter have resulted in the arrest of seven suspects amongst them, two former Ministers Ronald Chitotela 49, And And Nickson Chilangwa 52.

Mr Kajoba said the two former Ministers together with four others James Kaniki 41, Kalamba Chifumbe 41, Chabu Chitotela 36 And Kunda Chitotela 43 have been jointly charged and arrested for, malicious damage to property, threatening violence, assault occasioning actual body harm and unlawful wounding which occurred in Kawambwa on August 12, 2021.

Whilst a woman identified as Charity Chibwe 43 has been charged and arrested for assault occasioning body harm and malicious damage to property.

He said the seven suspects have since been released on police bond and will appear in court soon.

Speaking in an update report on cases of national interest, Mr Kajoba said the Mitete DC his Charged With three Counts of Unlawful wounding which occurred on June 29, 2015 in Sichili area of Mulobezi District.

He said this occurred during the Mulobezi Parliamentary By-Election.

Other cases which the Police have made progress are shooting incident involving Mushaukwa Mushaukwa 47, of Sesheke who is alleged to have been shot on June 5, 2021 in Sichili area during the campaign period for the Mulobezi By-Election.

Police will soon be submitting a docket of the case to the National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) for perusal and prosecution.

He said an inquiry file has been opened in the case of alleged tribal remarks involving Dr Chishimba Kambwili, which occurred on September 30, 2021 around 16:00hrs at Kaumbwe School grounds in Petatuke District during the Kaumbwe Parliamentary By-Election campaigns.

Police conducted investigations and compiled a docket of the case which has since been forwarded to the DPP as the alleged offence requires consent to prosecute from the DPP’s Office.

And in the murder case involving Lawrence Banda which occurred on October 6, 2019 in Kaoma during the campaigns for the Council Chairperson By-Election in Kaoma, he said the Police have identified one suspect and an arrest will soon be affected.

The IG said the murder case involving Obed Kasongo, police had re-instituted Investigations regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Kasongo, who was then NDC Youth Chairperson for Lusaka Province.

Mr Kajoba said the post-mortem report indicates that the cause of death was as a result of a medical condition the victim was suffering from and not as a result of the assault injuries the victim sustained.

He said police managed to charge and arrest Bowman Lusambo for one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and another count of unlawful wounding and has since appeared before the Luanshya Magistrate court.

This incident occurred during the roan parliamentary by-elections which took place on April 11, 2019.

Mr Kajoba also said that the 2016, in shooting incident at the Supreme Court grounds during the presidential petition, the Police managed to trace the victim identified as Peter Masani 29, of Kanyama Compound who was shot and unlawfully wounded on December 25, during the hearing of the 2016 presidential petition at the Supreme Court grounds.

“The Zambia police service would like to assure the general public that we will use all legal means at our disposal to bring to book all those that have committed crimes,” he said.
