Police in Chililabombwe have impounded a truck carrying 15 dogs that were being transported from Lusaka and intended to be smuggled into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The dogs of different species are believed to belong to Edward Ntini of Lusaka, but police have impounded the truck to carry out further investigations.
This comes almost four months after a similar occurrence were 70 dogs were being smuggled from Mkushi and destined for the DRC, with about 40 of the dogs dying due to suffocation on the truck.
Copperbelt Commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba said the incident occurred yesterday at 13:20 hours at Konkola check point in Chililabombwe.
“Police impounded one Light truck Fuso registration number BAZ 2776, Laden with 15 adult dogs of different species, intended to be smuggled into DRC via Kasumbalesa border.The driver for the said motor vehicle is Tembo Moses 30, of Matero Township in Lusaka.
The District Veterinary Office was notified for advice and it was discovered that the stock movement permit accompanying the dogs was actually signed by an office orderly in the vet office in Lusaka,” he said.
Mr Mweemba said the truck has so far been impounded by the Local veterinary office and taken to their office together with the dogs for further investigations.
