The Mumbwa Immigration Office has secured the conviction of a 25-year-old Tanzanian peasant farmer Juma Damson for illegal entry, unlawful stay, and engaging in work without a permit.
Immigrations Public Relations Officer Namati Nshinka said Juma Damson was apprehended on May 31, 2023 in Mumbwa District’s Mbwemutanda Area by a team of Immigration Officers and Officers from the Department of Forestry during a random operation to curb illegal charcoal burning in the District.
Mr Nshinka said this was after he was found in the act of charcoal burning.
He said the Officers later established that he was a Tanzanian and had entered and continued to stay in the country illegally.
He appeared before the Mumbwa Magistrate Court on June 2023, where he was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour for each of the three counts. The sentences are to run concurrently. The Mumwa court outcome brings the number of convictions secured by the Department of Immigration between 9th and 15th June 2023 to 66.
Meanwhile, the Department of Immigration, between 9th and 15th June 2023, apprehended 100 persons for various immigration offences, removed 170 illegal immigrants from the country, and refused 11 foreign nationals entry into the country for failing to meet entry requirements.
