Surya Service Station Embroiled in Contamination Scandal

By ALICE NACHILEMBE
The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has launched an investigation into alleged fuel water contamination at Surya Service Station in Woodlands, Lusaka.

ERB Acting Manager Public Relations Musonda Chibulu said that preliminary investigations reveal that the fuel was contaminated with water on Saturday, January 25, 2025, around 19:30 hours.

Mr Chibulu said eight motorists who refueled around the same time reported vehicle malfunctions due to the contaminated fuel.

He said ERB promptly instructed the station to halt fuel sales as investigations began.

Mr Chibulu said the station will only resume sales after the investigations conclude and the product meets applicable Zambian Standards.

“The affected motorists have sought compensation from the station to restore their vehicles to normal working condition. The ERB urges other motorists who purchased fuel between 19:30 and 20:30 hours and experienced vehicle performance issues to contact Surya Petroleum Limited.

To facilitate the investigation, motorists are required to provide proof of purchase, such as a receipt. The station’s CCTV system will also be used to verify transactions during the affected period,” he said.

Mr Chibulu said ERB advises all motorists to obtain receipts when purchasing fuel and report any contaminated fuel incidents to both the service provider and ERB promptly.

Motorists can contact the ERB through the toll-free line 8484, social media platforms, or visit their offices in Lusaka, Kitwe, Livingstone, and Kasama.
