Sixteen students have lost their properties worth thousand kwachas after fire swept through their boarding house in Luanshaya’s Roan area.
Copperbelt Police Spokesperson Peacewell Mweemba said that three rooms of the boarding house No.475/3 Roan valued at K132,120 and the property of 16 students who rent the boarding house valued at K87,067=00 total value is K219,187=00 was burnt to ashes.
Mr Mweemba said the cause of fire is not yet known.
He said facts of the matter are that on July 27, 2023 at around 06:00 hours all the students wake up and conducted their daily routines as usual and around 12:30 hours 13 of the students went for work at Roan General Hospital where they are doing school attachments and only three students remained sleeping in the house because they were in night shift.
“At around 15:45 hours they were awakened by people shouting outside that the house was on fire and when they woke up they found out that three rooms were on fire and smoke was all over in the house. They all quickly rushed outside through the windows and waited for the fire brigade to come to their rescue as some people braved the fire and managed to retrieve some of the properties,” he said.
Mr Mweemba said the fire brigade came and managed to put out the fire.
He said the landlady who lives in Lusaka was then informed about the fire incident who later informed her father to report on her behalf.
Mr Mweemba said the scene of incident was visited and police confirmed the report however the cause of fire is not known as the report from Zesco is not out.
