Southern University deregistered

By JOHN SAKALA
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has deregistered the Southern University for failing to meet remedial measures set out by HEA.

HEA Corporate Communications Officer Birbal Musoba said the authority had in accordance with the provisions of the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013 Part IV: Section 23 (3) deregistered Southern University, certificate No. HEA/008, from operating as a Higher Education Institution (HEI) within the Republic of Zambia.

Mr Musoba said the deregistration of Southern University had been gazetted in Gazette Notice No. 854 of 2020, which was published on Friday, 11th September, 2020.

“The institution had, therefore, been directed to stop ALL operations and, according to the provisions of the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013 Part IV Section 23 (4) and (5), was given seven (7) days to surrender the original certificate of registration to the Authority or risk being liable, upon conviction, to a fine or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years, or to both.

“HEA will continue its sustained efforts in Ensuring Quality in Higher Education by vigorously conducting institutional audits on HEIs so that the provision of higher education in Zambia fulfils the Seventh National Development Plan of “Enhancing Human Development,” he said.
