Solwezi Council Public Relations Officer Joy Sichizya said the Local Authority was impressed with the performance of some of the refuse collecting companies.

Ms Sichizya said that even those that underperformed in the period, they can do better in an effort to provide equality services to the residents.

She said the companies were granted an opportunity to present reports on their operations in terms of successes scored and challenges faced.

“This came to light when the Council Waste Management Committee held a meeting with companies that have been contracted to collect waste in public places and residential areas in order to evaluate their performance. The refuse collection companies that have been engaged comprised of: Wana Cleaning and Refuse Collection Services Limited (Urban South Zone), Waste Maid Enterprises Limited (Mitech Zone), Lembi Limited (Urban North Zone) and Transco Waste Management and Transports Limited (Mushitala Zone).

“The engagement of the aforementioned refuse collection companies by the Local Authority is in line with provisions of section 6 & 7 of the Solid Waste Management Act No. 20 of 2018 which stipulates that the Local authority…may undertake solid waste management and services in partnership with public or private bodies,” she said.

She appealed to all residents of Solwezi to desist from digging rubbish pits in their backyards but instead subscribe to waste collection in their respective zones.

Ms Sichizya encouraged Solwezi community to actively participate and work with the Council in an effort to actualize the objectives of the ongoing Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign.
