Solwezi Council cleans markets, public places

By ALICE NACHILEMBE
Solwezi Municipal Council undertook a cleaning exercise today to clean markets and other public places to encourage sound hygiene practices and prevent possible outbreaks of diarrheal diseases in the district.

This is in line with the Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign, the Council Officers who split into different markets and other public places were joined by Officers from Zambia Army and Zambia Police.

SMC Assistant Public Relations Manager Esther Chirwa said during the clean-up at Kyawama market, Council staff and the security wing from Zambia Army took time to sensitize motorists and passengers on the need to take ownership for having a clean environment and the importance of discarding waste in designated places.

Ms Chirwa said it was sadly noted that there was complacency among traders and other residents to participate in the clean-up exercise.

She said the call as a Council is for all stakeholders who include other Government Line Ministries and the private Sector to jump on board so that together we can achieve the objective of the campaign by having a clean and healthy environment.

“We further urge marketeers, bus operators, traders and the public in general to respond positively when a call for clean ups is made in order to take proactive steps before possible outbreaks of any diseases in the district.

The Council expresses its gratitude to the security wings for the continued and unwavering support in enhancing proper hygiene and sanitation through participation in such programs” she said.
