The SADC group of Ambassadors in Brazil have bewailed the looming danger of an economic paralysis unless full-bodied mechanisms confront COVID-19 in Southern Africa.
At a monthly virtual meeting in Brasilia, the SADC envoys called for an immediate and robust mechanism by member countries to keep their economies afloat.
Zambia’s Ambassador to Brazil Alfreda Kansembe said inevitably long-term economic recovery plans should already be in place.
She said economic resilience in the SADC region should be the buzzword with systems that will retain human capital even after the impact of COVID-19.
Dr Kansembe said the SADC group of Ambassadors should play a key role and ensure the SADC-Brazil business forum goes according to plan as a marketing opportunity for respective countries in the SADC region.
At the same meeting, Tanzania ceded the SADC Chairmanship to Mozambique with the Maputo envoy Gamiliel Munguambe pledging to work tirelessly for the group’s success.
Dr Kansembe thanked the outgoing Chairperson Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi and expressed good will to the incoming Chairperson, Ambassador Munguambe.
Mr Munguambe said he will fight hard to attain the team’s objective of strengthening Bilateral Relations between Brazil and SADC Member states.
He said it is through the SADC group’s concerted efforts that the Brazilian Government will be able to fulfill its mandate of supporting African Countries in various fields of development using the South to South Cooperation forum.
