Copperbelt Spokesperson for the Socialist Party Reagan Kashinga, has voiced his concerns, alleging that the ruling party is undermining democracy and limiting the political space in the country.
Mr. Kashinga emphasized that the democracy for which the country’s forefathers fought is under threat from the ruling government.
He accused the ruling party of effectively declaring a political war on all citizens, suggesting they are willing to resort to any means to ensure their political survival.
Furthermore, Mr. Kashinga criticized the ruling party’s interference in opposition leadership and its infiltration of government institutions.
In addition to these political concerns, Mr. Kashinga raised economic issues, highlighting the government’s failure to address the rising cost of living.
He pointed out the challenges faced by citizens in affording basic necessities like mealie meal, electricity, and transportation, asserting that these have become significant achievements in themselves.
Mr. Kashinga implored the government to take immediate steps to reduce the cost of living by addressing the production costs of essential services and products.
Specifically, he called for the government to involve cheaper fuel dealers to lower fuel prices, which he believes would stimulate business activity and prevent business closures.
He also voiced concerns about the agricultural sector, particularly during the rainy season, where the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) is in disarray, leaving small-scale farmers uncertain about their future.
Mr. Kashinga accused the government of favoring commercial farmers over local farmers, resulting in higher agricultural product prices for consumers.
The Socialist Party (SP) is demanding a reduction in fertilizer costs through the introduction of subsidies to halve the current prices, offering a temporary solution to the problem.
