Rock fall kills miner at Lubambe Mine

A miner at Lubambe Copper Mine in Chililabombwe has died after a rock fell on him.

Elijah Maseka 34, of Konkola Township died after the rock fell on him.

Both Copperbelt Deputy Commissioner of Police Bothwell Namuswa and Lubambe Copper Mine Communications Manager Loyce Saili confirmed the death of Mr Maseka.

Mr Namuswa said Mr Maseka, a Long Hole Rig Operator at Lubambe died around 22:05 hrs.

He said the accident happened at 3352 feet level at W Rab 2.

And Ms Saili said an accident had happened underground at the Lubambe Copper Mine which tragically resulted in the death of an employee.

She said no other employees were injured.

“The Mine management has suspended all production activities underground except for critical tasks like water pumping and ventilation.

“Investigations by the Mine Safety Department are underway to establish the cause of the accident. The mine management, staff and employees offer the family their deepest condolences and will be supporting the family in this time of great tragedy,” she said.
