Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda Tambatamba has called for the protection of migrant workers because they form a key component of the labour force market.
Ms Tambatamba has revealed that migrant workers offered key services such as health especially in the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Migration in today’s world defines reality, hence the need to protect migrant workers from associated risks and in the promotion of human rights,” she said.
She has emphasized that the New Dawn Government believes that a well-managed migration neutralizes the threats that come with respects of human rights of migrants, addresses the root causes of migration, and promotes safety and orderly mobility.
Ms Tambtamba was speaking in Lusaka during the official opening of the first Zambia country level tripartite dialogue on the development of a labour migration policy.
Earliar during the event, Southern Africa Migration Management (SAMM) Project Chief Technical Advisor, Gloria Moreno-Fontes said the strategy is key in meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by the year 2030. Ministry of Labour and Social Security in conjunction with International Organisation for Migration and other stakeholders is holding a three (3) days consultative workshop on Labour Migration Policy Formulation.
