Recalled metformin drug was not procured and distributed by ZAMMSA

The Zambia Medicines Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) would like to emphatically state that the recently recalled drug, Metformin Tablets, by Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) was not procured nor distributed by ZAMMSA.

We have information that ZAMRA, on the 10th of December 2023, recalled Metformin Tablets 500 Milligrams Batch number KBT018 which was supplied by Yash Pharmaceuticals company and manufactured by Bliss GVS Pharma PVT Limited of India.

As ZAMMSA, we have a long framework contract with suppliers for the same drug and we have had no issues with the conformity of Metformin procured, stored and distributed by ZAMMSA. All the Metformin that is being distributed by ZAMMSA is safe for consumption.

As per standard operating procedure, all the medicines procured by ZAMMSA are subjected to a pre distribution Quality Control assessment by ZAMRA before they are dispatched to the public health facilities across the country.

ZAMMSA remains fully committed to providing safe, cost effective and quality medicines and medical supplies.
