Proper electrol system cardinal for peace before, after elections

By ALICE NACHILEMBE

The Continental Leadership Research Institute has called for proper systems to avoid accusations of electoral malpractice in the forthcoming 2021 general elections.

Commenting on the just ended Uganda elections, Institute Executive Director, Paul Hakoola, says his organization had followed the Uganda elections and picked up some lessons for the forthcoming August elections in Zambia.

Mr Hakoola said among them the need for proper systems which would ensure the protection of the electoral process.

He said the need for stakeholders to employ enough election monitors throughout entire process so that the systems can be more transparent.

Mr Hakoola said that what happened in Uganda where the regime was oppressing the opposition as regards to holding of meetings and campaigning is retrogressive to the growth of democracy.

He said Zambia should continue to be a pillar of political stability in the region and ensure that its record of being a stable democracy remains intact even after the 2021 elections.

Mr Hakoola has since called on the African Union and other regional bodies ensure that they are more robust in terms of handling election matters during the electoral process.
