Poultry sector has the potential to Contribute to GDP-NGO

By IREENE MULENGA
A Local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) on the Copperbelt says that the poultry sector has potential to contribute significantly to Zambia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) if the sector is fully harnessed.

Alejo Community Support Project Coordinator Alex Mutale has also urged Government to assist village chicken farmers penetrate the Congo DRC that has a huge market for birds.

Mr Mutale, whose organization has in the last five years distributed over half a million village chickens to cooperatives in nine Provinces, said that the Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry should assist the organization to create synergies with well-established Congo DRC entrepreneurs interested in buying village chickens from Zambia.

And Mr Mutale said that Alejo Community Project is also talking to unions in the extractive sector for miners to also start venturing into village chicken as a way of enhancing their income and generating extra funds.

“People should venture into village Chicken as a way of enhancing income and generate more money, at the same time create employment for others,” he said.

He said there is need for miners to start thinking outside the box and venture into entrepreneurship.

Mr Mutale said it is for this reason Alejo Community Support Project has organized a stakeholders’ engagement meeting that will take place on Friday November 5, 2021 in Mufulira so that stakeholders can be trained on how to become successful entrepreneurs.
