Police frees family from jaws of death

By ALICE NACHILEMBE
Police in Lusaka have rescued a family of Kalingalinga from an angry mob on suspicion of practicing witchcraft.

A family of Kalingalinga had been surrounded by an angry mob and death was imminent but police rushed to the area and managed to rescue the victims.

The rescue operation was not easy as the mob kept on surging forward like vampires forcing the riot police to fire live shots and teargas canisters to disperse the crowd.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo told The Independent Observer that two people from the neighborhood went to the victim’s house around 15: 00 hours with a witchdoctor.

Ms Katongo said they deceived the owner of the house on pretext that they wanted to conduct prayers with her because of complaints of witchcraft in the community.

She said the victim did not hesitate to allow the trio to enter her house and immediately after that, her house was surrounded by an angry mob.

The police spokesperson said the angry mob had set on fire a makeshift toilet at the victim’s house and also broke two windows to the house.

“We have launched a man hunt for the two people from the neighborhood together with the Witchdoctor who are currently on the run. We appeal to members of the public to avoid disseminating unverified information.

“They should always analyze and verify information before taking action.  Our country has got Laws that govern the conduct of people and also institutions mandated to handle concerns from the general public hence our appeal is for everyone to avoid taking law into their own hands but follow laid down procedures in airing their grievances,” she said.

She said the situation has returned to normal while the family has been taken to place of safety.
