Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has called on Police officers deployed to police by- elections to be professional by ensuring that they fairly provide security to all Political Parties taking part in the elections.
Mr Kanganja also cautioned officers against engaging in active politics saying all those who wanted to join active politics should surrender their uniform.
He has advised officers to avoid using excessive force and unnecessary discharge of fire arms adding that officers should use firearms in accordance with what the Law provides for.
He directed the officers to sternly deal with perpetrators of violence irrespective of their political affiliation.
The Inspector General is on the Copperbelt to check on security situation and deployment pattern of officers in Luanshya’s Roan Constituency.
He said for effective policing, Police on the Copperbelt have divided Roan Constituency into 10 Zones and officers have been deployed in the Zones.
The Inspector General has so far expressed satisfaction on the deployment pattern.
And Copperbelt Permanent Secretary, Bright Nundwe said peace was paramount everywhere saying the presence of politicians in the area should not instill fear in the local people of Luanshya.
Mr Nundwe was speaking when the IG had paid a courtesy call on him.
He said that there was need for politicians taking part in the election to be peaceful and level headed because every single life is precious.
“We can not continue riding on confusion. Violence disturbs everything. We want to see level headedness in all those taking part in this election.” he said.
The Inspector General is scheduled to proceed to Luapula Province tomorrow, March 26, 2019 to check on the security situation in Bahati Constituency.
