Police arrest two UPND cadres in Mongu

Police in Mongu have arrested John Chiinga aged 37, of unknown house number in Helen Plots, for the offences of assault on Police Officer, resisting arrest and conduct likely to cause the Breach of Peace.

Police also arrested Nyambe Imasiku aged 27 of unknown house number in Kapulanga Compound for Malicious Damage to property.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale said that brief facts are that on June 3, 2021 around 15: 45 hours, police received information that cadres from the United Party for National Development (UPND) led by Chiinga and Imasiku had attacked the Patriotic Front (PF) cadres who were mounting campaign materials on Zesco electric poles along the Mongu-Lusaka road.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the cadres from the two political parties clashed after the UPND cadres pulled down and tore the PF Chitenge materials including camping flags which were mounted on the electric poles,’’ he said.

Mr Mwale said that the Police who rushed to the scene apprehended Nyambe Imasiku and John Chiinga who is said to be a UPND youth constituency chairman.

“During apprehension, Chiinga resisted and in the process assaulted the Officer-in-Charge for Mongu Central Police Station identified as Edgar Nkowane aged 41, Mr Nkowane sustained a painful right arm and leg and he was rushed to Lewanika General Hospital where he was attended to and later discharged, while the suspects are currently detained in Police custody. ” he said.
