The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) says plans to establish an airstrip in Choma, Southern Province, have advanced.
ZAF Commander Collin Barry said the proposed new airstrip will be established in an area that has already been identified within Choma.
“I’m aware of the lack of an air strip in the Provincial capital, following the construction of the six storey government complex and staff houses for the provincial administration on the land that used to be an airstrip, this move is meant to benefit both the military and all flights,” he said.
General Barry said that an airstrip is needed in Choma because the air corridor between Livingstone and Lusaka is busy.
He said this when he paid a courtesy call on Southern Province, Acting Permanent Secretary Namani Monze, accompanied by some senior officers in the air force.
And Dr Namani Monze welcomed the establishment of an airstrip, and said it will not only enhance the linkage of Choma to other parts of the province, but will also ease movement from the provincial capital, to Lusaka.
ZANIS reports that Dr Monze assured the ZAF Command that the Provincial administration will do its part, and ensure the project is accelerated.
