The South African government has assured all foreign transporters of its unconditional support and security against xenophobic attacks.
South African Deputy Director General in the Department of Transport Chris Hlabisa was speaking during the trilateral meeting on cross boarder transportation among Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa in Livingstone.
Mr Hlabisa said the government had scaled-up its surveillance systems and intelligence monitoring mechanisms to ensure that no foreign transporter was killed or harmed while in that country.
He said the recent burning of Zambian trucks in that country was an isolated act of criminal activities and that the government had since declared war against such activities.
“South African Police Service in conjunction with the Intelligence Units had intensified internal road safety management in order to guarantee safety for all road users,” he said.
And Zambian Ministry of Transport and Communications Director Transport Nicholas Chikwenya, commended the South African government for putting in place measures to safeguard lives and property for foreign transporters.
Meanwhile Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) Director and Chief Executive Officer Zindaba Soko said Zambia will continue engaging signatories to the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
Mr Soko said the aim of the engagement is to ensure protocols on transport are adhered to which include the promotion of security and road safety for all member states.
