Chingola Member of Parliament Matthew Nkhuwa has commissioned the rehabilitated Mutenda Police Post to Zambia Police.
The Police Post was damaged by incensed mob that wanted to personally lynch gassers who were reported to have been detained at the police post.
Despite this damage, Mr Nkhuwa mobilised resources to refurbish the post better than it was.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Police Post today, Mr Nkhuwa said the Head of State President Edgar Lungu was worried about the security situation in Chingola including Mutenda.
He said the President’s concern made him to first mobilise transport for police where he gave his Toyota Hilux twin cab to police and later lobbied for a Toyota Hilux Extra cab from Toyota Zambia for the police.
“The redone police post must be treated as your infrastructure because it enhances security situation in the country. I would have loved to build staff officers for the officers but our mandate is faster running out. But if am re-elected, I will build two staff houses.
“In the mean time, I commit myself to pay rentals for two houses rented for the police officers that will be manning this police post. I will pay for six months then continue till Election Day,” he said.
Receiving the Police Post, Copperbelt Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga who thanked Mr Nkhuwa for rehabilitating the Police Post said police officers are simply agents of peace.
Ms Katanga said police officers’ role as agents of peace is to maintain peace and deal with people who want to disturb peace.
She said starting next year, as the country heads to general elections, the political activities will heighten thereby need the presence of police.
Ms Katanga expressed sadness that the community had opted to damage public property.
She promised the residents that the rioters who are at bay will be arrested.
‘This is the second Police Post that we are receiving from Mr Nkhuwa. He gave a state of art police Post in Riverside Township,” she said.
Chingola Constituency Development Trust (CCDT) Chairperson John Zgambo said the Police Post was rehabilitated with the help of Total Zambia, Puma Energy and Matty Investments which provided supervision and technical support.
