Police lies in the killing of Mbala golf player in Chipata is slowing embarrassing the police service.
This was after shocking postmortem results that the golfer was shot three times.
James Bwalya 42, who was Captain for Chila and Samora Machel golf clubs died after being shot by a police officer who was manning at the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) regional office after suspecting him to be a criminal.
Initially, Eastern Deputy Police Chief Geoffrey Kunda claimed that Mr Bwalya was hit by a stray bullet.
But speaking at Chipata Central Hospital mortuary after a postmortem was conducted, Chipata Golf club Captain Edward Phiri expressed displeasure that police tried to conceal other details in the matter.
Mr Phiri said during postmortem, it was discovered that Mr Bwalya sustained three gunshot wounds contrary to what was earlier reported that he was hit by a stray bullet.
He said that police who are supposed to protect lives are instead failing to carry out their duties effectively.
He said there was no way that Mr Bwalya would have been a criminal when he was a renowned golfer, questioning why the police attempted to protect a criminal.
And the trigger happy Police officer has been arrested.
Mr Kunda said the police officer was arrested and charged with murder for killing a Zambia Air Force (ZAF) civilian golfer, on Monday.
He has also disclosed that a postmortem has been conducted without hinting on the results.
He withheld the name of the officer involved for fear of jeopardizing investigations.
