Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister, Jonas Chanda, has urged the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), to expedite the process of formulating new regulations on the control of emissions from mobile sources.
The Minister said it is important to speed up the process to be undertaken in collaboration with the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA).
He has explained that the new regulations will protect people from hydrocarbons, which he said are dangerous to health.
Dr Chanda said one of the major causes of non-communicable diseases is pollution.
The Minister said this when he held a meeting with ZEMA management in Lusaka.
Meanwhile, Dr Chanda said economic activities should not come at the expense of protecting the environment.
He has since urged ZEMA to enforce the law on environmental protection.
He said the mandate of ensuring sustainable management of the environment is critical to achieving sustainable development in the country.
