The Ndola City Council has embarked on a programme to disinfect schools as a way to contain the spread of the Corona virus (COVID-19) in the city.
The programme started following Government’s decision to reopen schools for non examination classes.
The Council would disinfect 257 schools.
This week, the Ndola City Council in partnership with the Private Schools Association disinfected about 25 schools out of 78 private schools in the city.
Ndola City Council Director of Public Health Christopher Mtonga said the disinfection of private schools in Ndola was part of the multi-sectoral initiative to contain COVID-19.
Mr Mtonga commended the private schools’ body in Ndola for combining recourses with Ndola City Council to ensure that COVID-19 preventive measures were quickly put into effect.
“The local authority has embarked on this programme which is meant to ensure that a conducive and safe environment is provided for our learners in schools.
This is not a once–off exercise but will require enough time, the team is targeting about 257 schools within the district,” Mr. Mtonga said.
The Council has also continued conducting on- the – spot checks on the compliance levels in schools to ensure that preventive measures are being followed.
He called on the stakeholders and individuals with progressive ideas to team up with the Public Health Department in the fight against COVID-19.
Private Schools Association Copperbelt President Joseph Daka said all registered private schools would be disinfected at a minimal fee of K500 as part of the robust partnership between the association and Ndola City Council.
Mr. Daka said he was impressed with the Ndola City Council which has personnel and equipment which is suitable to handle public health emergencies such as COVID-19.
He appealed to the schools that were operating illegally to register and get affiliated with the association, as it was the only way they would get useful information relating to COVID- 19 and and would be updated with the guidelines from the Ministry of General Education.
