Buteko market in Mufulira has been burnt to ashes consuming the area where carpenters sell their merchandise.
Fire swept through the market around 01:00 hours this morning and destroy goods worthy thousands of kwacha.
Mufulira Municipal Council Assistant Public Relations Officer Thandiwe Tembo has confirmed the inferno to The Independent Observer in an interview.
Ms Tembo who could not quantify the loss, said the fire brigade had rushed to the scene and were only able to contain the inferno around 04:00 hrs.
She said the Council had not yet established the cause of fire but some people talked to at the market suspect unattended to brazier.
Ms Tembo said part of the area where vegetables are sold was left in debris.
“We are still carrying out investigations to know as to what may have caused the fire,” she said.
