Mufulira Municipal Council (MMC) has removed makeshift stands and pallets for traders along Butondo road and freedom way due to resistance by marketeers.
The traders were displaced following the guttering of Buteko Market by fire on July 12, 2018.
Mufulira Council Assistant Public Relations Manager Thandiwe Tembo said the exercise was as a result of resistance by the marketers to move from the streets.
Ms Tembo said marketeers don’t want to trade from the newly constructed market shelter at Malela Market constructed by Mopani Copper Mines at a cost of K 1, 500, 000.00.
She said the streets lack basic amenities such as shelter, ablution facilities, refuse disposal bays and storage facilities.
Ms Tembo said the Council will not allow anyone to trade from the streets in order to prevent various waterborne diseases and keep Mufulira Clean, Green and Healthy.
She said the Council has sound a warning to those that may still be conducting business on the streets to stop with immediate effect.
She said those found wanting would be dealt with by the Law.
“We are also appealing to the residents of Mufulira to desist from buying food and other merchandise from the street to maintain sanity,” he said.
The exercise of removing traders was done together with the Zambia Police Service on Friday night 11th January 2019 around 22:00 hours and came to an end on Saturday morning at 08:30 hours.
