Mother assaults child in Kitwe

A seven year has allegedly been assaulted by her mother in Kitwe’s Kamakonde Township for visiting her grandmother.

Copperbelt Police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba confirms that Angela Chisanga aged 35 beat and assaulted her daughter who sustained a bruised forehead, cut on the upper lip, a loose tooth, swollen hands and legs, and general body pains.

Mr Mweemba said that a metal bar is alleged to have been used to inflict the injuries.

He also said that the incident occurred on January, 2023 at around 09:00hours and the it was reported by Evans Mumba aged 31 who happens to be the uncle to the assaulted child.

“Brief facts of the case are that on 22nd January, 2023 Angela Neddy Chisanga went to visit her maternal grandmother Bertha Kyatabankana, because Angela was not in good books grandmother Bertha, Angela waited for her daughter, the victim to fall asleep and at around 04:00hours the victim was awakened by beating a hard hit with a metal bar,” he said.

Mr Mweemba added that Angela continued to assault her child by beating her with the metal bar till she sustained injuries.

“After this the mother locked her up in the house and went for her daily businesses. It was only until her aunty Maureen Mumba went to visit her sister and found her in that state, so Maureen took her niece to her brother’s place who later reported the case to the police,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said that a docket has been opened, and the child is currently admitted Kalulushi General Hospital.

He added that the suspect mother was apprehended and arrested by the police.
