Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation (ZUNO) President Tisa Chiponda says the Public Health Nurses have many unemployed and misplaced
nurses.

Ms Chiponda said the unemployed nurses include the direct bachelor’s degree holders in nursing who are currently having challenges to be absorbed in the health sector.

“We want to remind Government through the concerns regarding the Abridged Program for Enrolled Nurses. Despite having set a target as a country to have all the Enrolled Nurses convert to Registered Nurses by the end of 2023, they are lagging behind due to the challenges the Enrolled Nurses are facing regarding taking time off from their workplaces to upgrade their qualification, she said.

She also said that currently, the union has 7788 Enrolled Nurses
waiting to upgrade their qualification.

Ms Chiponda urges employers and all the relevant stakeholders to protect support and invest in the nursing and midwifery profession.

She said in order to strengthen the healthcare system in this country, it is important to seriously assess and improve the welfare of the nursing and midwifery profession.
