Mopani miner dies in an accident

A-45-year-old man has died in a mine accident at Mopani Copper Mines in Kitwe.

Justin Nsakanya, a Broiler Maker met his fate yesterday as the Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) Engineering and Mining crews were conducting planned weekly maintenance.
MCM Public Relations Manager  Nebert Mulenga comfirmed in a statement that the company is working closely with the Mines Safety Department, Police and other relevant authorities to investigate what could have caused the accident.
“It is with regret that MCM confirms the fatal incident at South Ore Body (SOB)  which occured on Sunday, March 20, 2022. The incident happened at 13:00 hours as the team from Mopani Engineering and Mining crews were conducting a planned weekly maintenance in the Main Cage Compartment at the SOB shaft bank.
”  One of the skips from the headgear unfortunately moved down the shaft and in the process hit and fatally injured one employee,” read the statement.
He said all operations at the SOB have since been suspended till further notice and MCM will provide necessary support to the deceased family.
