Mongu mayor dies in RTA

Mongu mayor Nyambe Matakala and Western Water managing director Leah Banda have died in a road accident.

Central Province Police Commanding Officer Donald Mwandila said the accident occurred today at around 05:30 hours at Tazara area on Great North road.

Speaking in a statement, Mr Mwandila said that involved in the accident was Ms Banda aged 42 of Mongu who was driving a Nissan caravan unregistered with Mr Matakala aged 37 on board from Nakonde heading to Kapiri-Mposhi.

Mr Mwandila said also involved was unknown driver of unknown age of Tanzania who was driving a Howo Sino truck registration number T759 DEN laden with copper from Kasumbalesa to Nakonde.

“The Accident happened when the driver of the truck was overtaking improperly hence collided head on with the first vehicle killing the driver and her passenger,” he said.

Mr Mwandila said Ms Banda and Mr Mataka died after sustaining fatal body injuries.

“The two bodies have been deposited to Mkushi District hospital mortuary awaiting identification and burial.

He said that the Nissan caravan is extensively damaged while the Truck front part is damaged.

Mr Mwandila said the driver of the truck is on the run.
