Modern Mupopopo coming

By ALICE NACHILEMBE
A new modern market shelter will be constructed at Mupopopo market in Chingola’s Nchanga Township to enable marketeers to trade in good environment.

Nchanga Member of Parliament Chali Chilombo said the marketeers suffered especially during the rainy season, hence the construction of the shelter.

Mr Chilombo said the shelter is going to accommodate all the marketeers at the market.

He said marketeers who are mostly women should also benefit from the developments in one way or the other so that they can also feel empowered.

Mr Chilombo said that the shelter which would be able to accommodate at least 60 stands would be completed in the next four months.

The MP said that he is following up on the issue of marketeers’ empowerment fund from the patron Chanda Kabwe as Chingola has not received anything.

And Buntungwa Ward Councillor Soko Mumba who accompanied the MP said the market shelter would allow the marketeers to trade in a conducive and safe environment free from diseases.

Mr Mumba said the market shelter which is currently in use does not give marketeers the sanity of trading because it is in the same place with bars.

“What used to happen is that when the people got drunk they would disturb the marketeers sometimes ending up vomiting on the tables, the situation which was not hygienic,” he said.

He has lobbied for marketeers empowerment through the office of the MP.

He said that the marketeers are struggling for survive and it would be motivating for them if they were to be empowered.

One of the marketeers Ruth Mwape said that a market shelter was good for them because they traded in a good and respectable place to be separated from the bars.
