Ministry of Labour suspends works at KEDA

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has suspended works at KEDA Zambia Ceramics Limited due to the company’s continuous violation of the labour laws.

This was during a follow-up inspection after the company was given a week to improve the conditions of service of their employees.

Principal Labour Officer Joseph Kaindama suspended works on an account that despite the company receiving caution from the Government, no action has been taken to improve the welfare of employees at the construction site.

Mr Kaindama said he was disappointment with management that has continued with its operations without securing Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), workers working without contracts and no toilets built on the site as advised.

He also said that even employees who are accommodated needs to live in a safe and healthy environment.

Mr Kaindama put management to task indicating that the Ministry would allow works to resume after meeting the necessary requirement of the guidelines stipulated in the Employment Code Act.

And addressing employees shortly, Mr Kaindama explained on the need to have the company suspend its operations because of the failure by management to meet the required guidelines on labor matters.

He explained that the country has laws in place concerning short term oral contractual obligation which should be on record and signed..

Mr Kaindama has warned employees to take the directive seriously and not report before the ministry instructs or they risk getting arrested together with their employers.

He has assured employees that the suspension of the company was temperol pending swift action frim management to implement the recommendations from the Ministry.
