Miner dies at Mopani mines

A 45 year old miner at Mopani Copper Mines has died after he was hit by a skip at the South Ore Body shaft in Kitwe.

Mopani Copper Mines Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga said in a statement that the accident occurred yesterday.

Mr Mulenga said all operations at the South Ore Body have since been suspended.

He has identified the deceased as Justin Nsakanya who is a boiler maker.

Mr Mulenga said the deceased met his fate as the engineering and mining crews from Mopani Copper Mines were conducting maintenance in a man cage.

He said in the process of the maintenance, one of the skips from the headgear moved down the shaft and hit the miner.

Mr Mulenga said Mopani Copper Mines is now working with the Zambia Police and the Mine Safety department to investigate the incident.
