Mine unions demanding the return of Vendeta condemned

By MAIMBO MWEEMBA

The Socialist Party on the Copperbelt says the call by the three Mine workers unions to support the government’s decision to bring back Vedanta to come and run Konkola copper leaves much to be desired.

Copperbelt Information Publicity Secretary Mukuka Bwalya said that they are wondering what has made the unions to shift the goal post.

“Because the same unions supported the liquidation of KCM two years ago. What has changed today for them to support the same investor whom the workers portrayed not to care for their interest and welfare. As Socialist party we tend to wonder in whose interest did our comrades made the decision. This has eroded the confindence the workers have in the Labour movement,” he said

Mr Bwalya has since advised the unions in support of the return of Vedenta that their allegiance should be to the workers and not politicians.

“Politicians come and go. To you our fellow workers in the Mining industry we urge you to remain steadfast,” he said
