Mansa police officer commits suicide on duty

A police officer of Mansa district in Luapula province has allegedly committed suicide while on duty.

Constable Chitalu Isaac aged 33 is alleged to have committed suicide behind Maiteneke Police Post where he worked.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said a resident of Maiteneke area, Evans Ng’ombe, spotted Mr Chitalu’s body’s dressed in a police combat uniform lying in a pool of blood and an AK 47 firearm.

Speaking in a statement, Mr Hamoonga said when Mr Ng’ombe went at the inquiries office at Maiteneke Police Post to report the matter, he found two Community Crime Prevention Unit officers.

He said when the two CCPU officers went at the scene; they stated that Mr Chitalu was on duty with them.

“They immediately called the officer in charge for Maiteneke Police Post Sergeant Zileni Eric who rushed to the scene and identified the deceased as Constable Chitalu Isaac aged 33 of Zesco compound in Mansa a Police Officer based at Maiteneke Police Post,” he said.

Mr Hamoonga said the body has been picked and deposited it at Mansa General hospital mortuary.

He also said police are investigating the matter.
