Man takes own life, that of two kids after wife threatens him with divorce

A-30-year-old man of Lusaka has committed suicide by poisoning himself and his two children after a marital dispute.

Biggy Sibungo, 49, is alleged to have murdered his children by giving them an unknown poisonus substance which he also consumed.

Another child aged 10, survived the poisoning admistered by Sibungo after his wife threatened to divorce him.

The dead children are Troy Sibungo, eight, and Trunity Sibungo aged four.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said the incident happened yesterday in Chunga township, Chamutengo area.

Ms Katongo said Sibungo locked himself in one of the rooms at his uncle’s place where he allegedly took the poisonus substance.

“A man committed suicide by consuming an unknown poisonous substance which he is suspected to have also given to his three children which resulted in two of them dying,” she said.

She said the matter was reported to the police by the deceased’s uncle after he noticed Sibungo’s daughter struggling to walk.

“According to the Uncle of the deceased Webster Kapito 49, who reported the matter to Police, his nephew had gone to his house with three children,”she said.

She said the girl who survived was carrying a plastic bag containing a bottle of a soft drink.

“His uncle spotted the female juvenile struggling to walk as she was leaving the bedroom. Upon checking on the other occupants, he discovered that his nephew and the two other children were in a critical condition and that one of the children had died, ” she said.

Ms Katongo said Sibungo and Troy died upon arrival at Matero Level one hospital.

She said Trina is admitted to the same Hospital receiving treatment while the bodies of deceased persons have been taken to University Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

And Ms Katongo has urged couples to find better ways of resolving their difference rather than engaging in violence that can lead to loss of life.
