Man nabbed in connection with Copper theft

Police in Lusaka have apprehended a 32-year-old man of Chimwemwe Township in Kitwe in connection with the theft of Copper Cathodes.

The suspect identified as John Vwalika is believed to be a co-driver for Great Lakes Freight and Transport Company.

Police Deputy Spokesperson Danny Mwale said Police received a report of Theft of Goods in Transit were a Sino truck registration number AAL 041SF carrying 30 tonnes of Copper Cathodes property of Trammo DMCC of Mozambique valued at US 200, 000 enroute to Mozambique was diverted to unknown destination in Silverest area.

Mr Mwale said following the report, Police were tipped by a member of the public that there was copper which was been offloaded into another truck in Silverest area of Chongwe District.

He said Police rushed to the scene and intercepted a Howo Tipper truck registration number BCB 1845 loaded with suspected stolen Copper Cathodes. The truck was intercepted on January 18, 2023 around 16:40 hours as it was joining the Great East Road.

Mr Mwale said the driver of the truck identified as Oliveira Vicente Jemusse escaped upon seeing Police officers abandoning the co-driver and the truck.

He said Police apprehended John Vwalika (co-driver) and recovered the Copper Cathodes. The Howo truck has been impounded.

Investigations into the matter and a manhunt for the Mozambican driver have been launched.
